Who we are…

Big Hill Nordic is a Winter trail system, groomed for Nordic skiing by volunteers associated with the Challis Community Trails Alliance, a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Our operation is funded by donations and powered by a team of dedicated volunteers. The 2025-2026 Winter season is our second season of operations.

Grooming takes place every Tuesday and Saturday, snow conditions permitting. Trails are generally groomed for both skating and classic skiing. Our trail system is relatively small at the moment, to allow us to continue developing our grooming system and provide the best possible skiing experience for users, but if you ski all the trails you can get in 6-7 miles of skiing, more if you don’t mind repeating some loops.

In cooperation with The Bent Rod in Challis, we provide a ski gear lending library to allow people interested in trying the sport to do so without purchasing Nordic ski equipment. Ski equipment can be borrowed and returned during the normal business hours of The Bent Rod.

Our goals include continuing to enlarge the trail system, providing basic ski instruction, hosting fun events, and increasing youth participation. To make all this happen, we are actively seeking additional volunteers, trail users, and donations.
